NY Minute: Brooklyn Bridge & DUMBO Tour

Do you have a New York bucket list?

One of the things on my list is to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and explore the DUMBO neighborhood. I’m so happy that I was able to finally do it with my hubby a few days ago. Sharing with you the highlights of our Brooklyn Bridge and DUMBO Tour.

Brooklyn Bridge

The iconic bridge was opened on May 24, 1883. At that time, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. It looms majestically over the East River and connects the two NYC boroughs – Manhattan and Brooklyn.

We started our walk from the Manhattan side of the bridge. There were a lot of people walking, so it was hard to take photos with absolutely no one in the background. In spite of that, we really enjoyed the scenic views of the NYC skyline and the East River.

DUMBO is short for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. One of the most famous IG worthy spot is between the intersection of Washington St. and Water St.

We were there around midday, so the area was quiet busy. For that perfect DUMBO photograph, it’s advisable to go there early to avoid the crowd and traffic.

Time Out Market

Enjoy a traditional or trendy meal from an array of carefully selected eateries and bars. Whether you’re craving for Arab-Latin, Japanese, Mexican, Thai, or American cuisine – this food hall has something good to offer.

We decided to try Wayla’s homestyle Thai food and got an order of their fried rice with chicken. The Pad Thai looks delicious too, but we didn’t want to eat too much since we were planning to check out the famous Grimaldi’s Pizzeria next.

Grimaldi’s Pizzeria

The award-winning restaurant was named as one of the five best pizzerias in the US by the Food Network. It is located under the Brookyn Bridge at 1 Front St.

There was already a long line of people waiting when we arrived. Our turn finally came to be seated after almost 45 minutes. We ordered the 16-inch Brooklyn Pizza. It was made with roasted red peppers, creamy ricotta cheese, and Italian sausage atop their coal-fired, brick oven pizza. And yes… every bite is worth the wait!

Jane’s Carousel

The carousel was built by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company in 1922. It was restored and donated to Brooklyn Bridge Park by Jane and David Walentas.

You can ride this beautiful carousel for only $2. It’s a fun, inexpensive activity for the whole family. And, let me tell you… you are never too old to ride a carousel. My hubby and I actually did it and we enjoyed the nostalgic ride.

After a day of food and fun at DUMBO, we walked across the Brooklyn Bridge again. Though we felt a bit tired, we were so happy with our self-guided tour. As soon as we stepped into Manhattan, we decided to treat ourselves first with a cone of vanilla/chocolate ice cream.

  2. This was such a fun read. I enjoyed learning some new stuff. You look happy in these photos, you and your husband must have had the greatest time! I’d definitely try out the pizza place, that pizza looks scrumptious.

    • If I have to do it again, I will start the walking tour earlier to avoid the crowd and take better pictures. I’ve been curious about DUMBO for a while, so glad we were able to explore this area. The Timeout Market is a great place to try different cuisines.
