NY Minute: Financial District Walking Tour

I’ll Take Manhattan!

That’s the title of a novel I read years ago about love, ambition, and one unforgettable woman’s battle to regain control of her family’s publishing company.

That’s also my battle cry as I try to find my way around Manhattan. The borough is known to be the financial, cultural, and entertainment center of  New York. I want to explore various places around this area and share with you my travel adventures (and mistakes), so you can plan your trip better to NYC.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the Seaport District. Today, let me share with you our self-guided Financial District Walking Tour.

Charging Bull

The Charging Bull is also known as the Wall Street Bull. The 3200 kg bronze sculpture is a gift from Italian artist Arturo Di Modica. After the stock market crash of 1987, the sculptor spent 2 years welding the bull. It was designed to symbolize the “strength and power of the American people” and the “can-do” spirit to succeed.

Our next stop was the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) – the largest stock exchange in the world by market cap. NYSE was founded 227 years ago, on May 17, 1792.

Know the power of women in leadership. SHE makes a difference.

The 4-foot tall bronze statue was created by Kristen Visbal. It has captured the hearts of many and ignited a global conversation around women’s empowerment in the workplace.

Federal Hall National Memorial

The Federal Hall is known to be the birthplace of American Democracy. On this site, George Washington took his oath of office as the first US president on April 30, 1789.

Trinity Church

Trinity Church is one of the finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture in the United States. It used to be the tallest building in NYC (281-foot spire) until it was surpassed by the New York World Building in 1890. Adjacent to the church, you’ll find the burial grounds of Alexander Hamilton and other notable historical figures.

World Trade Center Complex

There are a lot of things to do at the World Trade Center (WTC) Complex. Here are some of the places you might want to visit:

  1. 9/11 Memorial and Museum
  2. The Oculus (WTC Transportation Hub)
  3. One World Trade Center and Observatory

I knew that we won’t have enough time to see everything at WTC. So, we only planned to take a few photos around the complex and find a nice place to eat nearby. We found several food stalls right by the WTC Oculus Plaza. There was an event going on  – the Smorgasburg Festival! NYC’s largest open-air food market.

World Trade Center Complex

The guy on my left is Ramil. We met him while waiting for our grilled Tatsu set. We started chatting, and I shared with him that I’m a blogger, and my hubby was planning to take a few more photos of  WTC. Unfortunately, we ran out of time because our bus will be leaving soon.

We really enjoyed our walking tour around the Financial District. Looking back, we should have started our FiDi tour a little bit earlier or stayed one more day to explore more places. But then again, there’s just so much to see… till next time NYC!

  4. I absolutely love all your photos! I have yet to visit some of these places or at least I can’t remember. Last year, hubby was able to go to the WTC and he took a guided tour which he said was totally worth it. It’s an emotional experience for sure.

    LOVE the shot of you and the 4ft tall statue.

  6. I don’t think people realize how large The Charging Bull is until they stand next to it. How nice of Ramil to allow you to use some of his photos, they are excellent. I haven’t been in the financial district in years so I enjoyed your post.

  14. I really need to go visit NY one of these days. It would be great to see the different kinds of sceneries in the city. The different statues out there looks neat – especially with the background stories behind them. The curch looks amazing! Glad you enjoyed your time out in NY!
